One of the most common concerns for patients interested in a breast reduction and lift is pain. It’s completely normal to feel nervous about the possibility of post-operative pain, but knowing what to expect can make the process less frightening. This blog explores typical pain levels in every stage of breast reduction and lift recovery and provides suggestions on what you can do to be more comfortable.

What Is Breast Reduction and Lift Surgery?

A breast reduction and lift is a complex surgery that removes surplus breast tissue and skin and remodels the breasts to a more elevated appearance. It can alleviate back, neck, and shoulder pain caused by heavy breasts and improve breast symmetry.

Dr. Eric Cha performs breast reduction and lift using general anesthesia, so patients do not feel any pain during the procedure itself.

What to Expect During Recovery

Patients will experience general discomfort and soreness in the immediate days after surgery. If you feel sharp pain during recovery, contact your plastic surgeon immediately. While every recovery is unique and pain tolerance can vary from patient to patient, the general experience can include:

  • Day 1–3: The first few days after surgery are often the most uncomfortable, with swelling, soreness, and tightness in the chest. Usually, over-the-counter pain medication is all that’s needed to manage discomfort.
  • Week 1: Soreness and fatigue are prevalent, yet pain starts to subside. Non-prescription painkillers can be used to manage discomfort if needed.
  • Week 2: The majority of patients regain energy levels and can move around more easily. Some slight tenderness in the breasts can still be felt.
  • Weeks 3–4: There may be lingering soreness and swelling, but patients largely feel like themselves again and are back to their regular routines, with approval from Dr. Cha.
  • One Month and Beyond: The majority of discomfort has disappeared, but some minor swelling or numbness can persist.

Is a Combination Procedure More Painful?

A breast reduction and lift combination might involve a little bit more discomfort than a single operation. This is because combining a breast reduction and lift requires more tissue manipulation and, therefore, a longer healing process. During the procedure, your surgeon will remove breast tissue and raise the remaining structure, which can cause additional soreness and swelling, particularly during the first week of recovery.

Nevertheless, most plastic surgeons, including Dr. Cha, combine the reduction and lift into one surgery to avoid two separate surgeries and recoveries. Most patients can easily manage post-operative discomfort with over-the-counter medications and a little preparation, with the benefit of only experiencing one recovery period.

Breast Reduction and Lift Recovery Tips

There are a few things that you can do to make recovery easier by planning ahead and following Dr. Cha’s instructions and recommendations. Helpful tips include:

  • Take prescribed or approved over-the-counter pain medication as directed.
  • Wear your specialized support garment to prevent swelling and support healing.
  • Lie on your back with supportive pillows to ensure that you remain in an elevated position.
  • No lifting, stretching, or strenuous activity until approved.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of incisions and observe scar care.
  • Keep hydrated, and consume healthy food to aid recovery.

The majority of patients resume light activities in two weeks and feel almost completely healed and back to their regular selves in four to six weeks.
