Breast reduction offers a myriad of benefits to women who have struggled with the physical and emotional pain of excessively large breasts. Most women are delighted with their results. However, many also express concerns over the scarring that comes with breast reduction. This blog goes over breast reduction scars in detail, from where they are located to steps patients can take for optimal healing and minimal visibility.

Types of Breast Reduction Scars

Dr. Eric Cha uses different types of incision techniques for his breast reduction surgeries, depending on how much correction a patient requires and whether he will perform a breast lift at the same time as the reduction. Incision options might include:

Periareolar (Donut) Incision

This incision is usually the best choice for minor reductions and leaves the least scarring. Dr. Cha places this incision around the lower portion of the areola (pigmented area around the nipple). The scar usually blends in with the pigmentation, so it is nearly unnoticeable once it heals.

Lollipop Incision

The lollipop incision is a common choice when a patient requires moderate reduction and a bit of lift. This incision encircles the areola, like the donut incision. It then extends down the lower center of the breast to the crease. This incision provides greater access when additional correction is needed. The incision in the lower portion of the breast will remain visible, but should fade considerably as it heals.

Anchor Incision

Dr. Cha typically uses the anchor incision for women who require significant correction. This includes the lollipop and adds a third horizontal incision along the breast crease. This lower incision is usually hidden underneath the breast. This approach allows for maximum access to the breast tissue to produce an optimal outcome for women who need the most reduction, with or without a breast lift.

How Fast Do Breast Reduction Incisions Heal?

Immediately following your breast reduction surgery, your incisions will be red, raised, and tender. They will also be covered with surgical dressings and held by a special support bra that minimizes swelling and provides support to the breasts as they heal. Using the support bra as instructed reduces tension on the incisions, which minimizes scarring.

The Inflammatory Phase

The early stage of breast reduction recovery is known as the inflammatory phase, where you will experience swelling and redness as the body’s natural healing mechanism goes to work. During this phase, you will receive instructions on keeping your incisions clean and dry. You will also have follow-ups with Dr. Cha to ensure your recovery proceeds smoothly.

The Proliferative Phase

By the end of the first week, you should start noticing improvement in the swelling around your incision. The second healing stage is the proliferative phase, during which your body produces collagen fibers that help close the wound. Many patients notice the color of their incision darkens during this phase, but rest assured, it will begin to fade soon.

The Maturation Phase

This final phase of incision healing is when patients can begin focusing on scar management. At this point, you can begin to apply silicon gels or sheets to the incisions to reduce redness and keep the tissue soft and hydrated. You can also use gentle massage to break down and flatten scar tissue.

Tips to Help Your Breast Reduction Scars Heal Well

Throughout your breast reduction recovery, you can take steps to help your incisions heal well and reduce the appearance of scarring:

  • Follow all post-operative instructions.
  • Wear a surgical bra to support breasts as they heal.
  • Use a silicone gel or strips to keep scars soft.
  • Keep scars out of the sun and use sunscreen daily.
  • Gently massage around incisions to break down scar tissue.
